Surely, learning how to blog has been nothing short of a roller coaster ride. It has had highs and lows. I have quit, then given in to my compulsion and have tried again.
I have started an endless number blogs, and I have walked away from most. I’ve had the powers that be close down blogger blogs, and I have even experienced a pinch of) success.
{And with all that, here I am. typing my little heart out.
A few months ago, I was in one of those |lulls|funks|valleys}, or phases of self pitty, when I had a lightbulb moment. I suddenly understood what had not fallen into place for me over the past couple years. It was basic. And so exact, I just knew.
I have killed all my spare time scouring the internet, trying to learn how to drive traffic to my blogs. I have attempted blogging on different free to blog sites trying to find the best blogging sites. I have spent cash, and I have even tried a handful of backlink building services. But it had all ended with the same conclusion.
Sub-acceptable traffic, at the very best. And that is what had caused me to lose hope. It is hard to keep working on something and to not see any rewards from your efforts. No matter how much you may like what you are doing, you start to questioning yourself.
So, like I was saying, I was down. I had quit, and had completely lost track of my blogs, when one day, I just got it. All the study of niches and search engine optimization, and backlinking had me. And all this excess information seemed to be {highly flawed, because for all I knew, I was getting no where.
Ok, so I am being a little dramatic. I learned stuff that was important, but it had so much useless stuff piled on top, I just couldn’t make it all fit.
Fact is, there is no “System”, because no two blogs are the same, but the basic concept of building a popular blog is the same.
I have established several rules on my learning how to blog roller coaster, and my number one lesson has been…(drum roll)… Speak with your voice. What? Well, this my friend, was my hardest lesson to learn. I was so consumed with being PC and not offending anyone. I go back and read my older posts and articles and I just come off so vanilla. So impersonal. And readers will feel the same. Don’t give a bad first impression or you will lose readers quicker than anything.
Right behind that, and right in line with that is, write to your readers. This means !!no keyword stuffing!! Write naturally, with your keyword in mind. So, yeah, that sounds contradictory, but its true. Its a very important step in learning how to blog.
Well, what else? Write your tail off. Write, write, and write more. And I am not just talking about on your blog. I am talking about EVERYWHERE! Article directories, blog commenting, friends blogs, and web 2.0 sites. This is a requisite for any blogger. This is an extremely important lesson to learn. You are trying to build awareness, this is one of the best ways to do this.
And what is the point of all this effort? Here is the juicy little secret of the day. Every single article off your blog gives you a chance to target a new set of keywords, ones that are related to your blog, but not the exact same ones. This, naturally will increase your visibility.
Speaking of keywords…. This also is highly important. Determined by your commitment to write, you will want to use keywords that have less competition. This usually means fewer natural monthly searches, but you have to rank page one in search engines, or your traffic will suffer.
And, how do you rank page one? Keyword anchored backlinks! That and on-page SEO. If you don’t know what those terms mean, you still have a lit to learn about blogging.
Last step I am going to leave with you today is, spread the wealth. What I mean by this is. Do not limit your articles you submit and backlinks you implement, to just one site. Use multiple sites, blogging platforms, and do not link out to these secondary properties from your primary, incoming links only.
There is more for sure. But I am in the business of showing people how to blog. You couldn’t have really thought you were going to learn to blog from one article. Learning to blog takes time and practice and patience most of all.
